Music and art school „Ottmar Gerster“
11/1/19 | 4:30 PM – 5:15 PM time
The percussion ensemble Markkleeberg of the music and art school "Ottmar Gerster" (Leipzig district) was founded in 2007 and has been led and supervised by Thomas Laukel ever since.
It has made it its business to bring the fascinating richness of sound of the most different percussion instruments closer to the audience.
The repertoire is extremely multi-layered and ranges from traditional percussion music from South America or Africa to complex new music and entertaining pieces that manage without conventional instruments and bring everyday objects or one's own body to sound. Above all, however, the concert programmes include arrangements by J.S. Bach, G. Bizet, L. Bernstein, M. Mussorgsky and A. Piazzolla, for example, in which well-known works are given a completely new character by the realisation of the melodies on marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel and xylophone.
The young musicians, aged between eight and twenty, rehearse and give concerts in large formations with up to 25 performers as well as in various smaller groups. The instrumentation is subject to constant change - adult pupils leave the ensemble due to education or study, but younger instrumentalists grow into the community.
The percussion ensemble Markkleeberg includes many state and federal prize winners of "Jugend musiziert" and other music competitions. The ensemble received an award at the Saxon Orchestra Competition and subsequently took part in the German Orchestra Competition in Ulm in 2016 with great success.
In the spring of 2019, the ensemble performed the composition "New York" by Garvin Bryars for the first time in Germany together with the Landesjugendorchester Sachsen.
The CD "Amerika" with works by John Cage, Ney Rosauro, Steve Reich, Leonard Bernstein, Astor Piazzolla and Zequinha de Abreu was released on the occasion of the orchestra's 10th anniversary.
